Ovarian stimulation

It consists of the application of hormones subcutaneously for 6 to 10 days, during which time the patient must visit the clinic 3 to 4 times for follicular monitoring and blood samples for proper control. This process is required to have an adequate number of eggs that when united with the sperm will generate the embryos available to achieve pregnancy.

Egg retrieval

This procedure is performed in the operating room under sedation for about 15 minutes. Egg retrieval is by transvaginal puncture with ultrasonographic guidance. In expert hands, complications are minimal and the patient can return to work the same day.

Insemination

It is a process that consists of the union of the eggs with the spermatozoa after preparation. There are 2 ways of union, the conventional one which is to place thousands of sperm around an ovum so that it penetrates naturally and the intracytoplasmic microinjection ICSI which is to introduce a sperm into each ovum, which we will study later.

Embryo culture

Period in which embryos remain in culture media in incubators for a maximum of 6 days, although in most cases they are maintained until the fifth day of embryonic development.

Embryo transfer

Usually the transfer is performed on the fifth day of embryo development or on day 6 (blastocyst) according to the indication taken by the physician and the embryologist. It consists of taking 1 or 2 embryos and placing them in a cannula and then introducing them into the uterus under ultrasound guidance.
