Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

Nowadays, it is possible to know the genetic information of an embryo before it is placed in the mother’s uterus, thanks to the development of the Preimplantational Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) technique.

Its initial indication was the maternal age, since it is an important factor for the woman not to get pregnant, or otherwise get pregnant and have an abortion, or the saddest thing is to conceive a pregnancy with a baby with a genetic alteration such as Down Syndrome (trisomy 21).

Its initial indication was the maternal age, since it is an important factor for the woman not to get pregnant, or otherwise get pregnant and have an abortion, or the saddest thing is to conceive a pregnancy with a baby with a genetic alteration such as Down Syndrome (trisomy 21).

After the ICSI process and under micromanipulation techniques, embryos on their third or fifth day of development are subjected to the extraction of 1 or 2 of their cells and then the nuclei are analyzed by marking their chromosomes with fluorescent probes or the DNA of these blastomeres is amplified and the genetic information is analyzed.

Meanwhile, the rest of the embryo remains in culture or is frozen for transfer as soon as the diagnosis is known.
